How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room

A rug has the ability to define a room before a single piece of furniture is placed. It sets proportions, softens architecture, and brings cohesion to the way a space is experienced.

Choosing the right size and placement is key. Too small, and the room can feel incomplete; too large, and it can dominate. The right scale creates quiet structure, grounding furniture, framing movement, and allowing each element to be placed with intention.

Colour & Pattern

Colour and pattern shape the overall mood of a space. Softer, tonal palettes create a sense of ease and continuity, while deeper hues add contrast and definition.

Pattern introduces movement and personality. Subtle designs add depth and texture, while more expressive motifs can serve as a focal point.

Solid-colour rugs offer a more minimalist impression and work well in layered interiors, allowing materials, furniture and styling details to take focus.

Living Spaces

A rug anchors the room, connecting key pieces and defining the conversation area. Ideally, it should sit beneath all major furniture, with sofas and chairs fully or partially placed on top to create a sense of cohesion.

The right rug size will depend on the scale of the space and the furniture within it. In larger living areas, a rug should be generous enough to unify the seating arrangement, while in more compact spaces, it can sit beneath the front legs of key pieces to maintain connection without overwhelming the room.

Dining Spaces

A rug brings balance to the dining area, framing the table and creating a defined setting for gathering. It should extend beyond the table on all sides, allowing chairs to remain comfortably on the rug when pulled out while maintaining flow and proportion.

Bedrooms 

A rug introduces softness to the room, adding warmth underfoot and creating a sense of calm around the bed. Ideally, it should sit beneath the bed and, where proportions allow, extend beneath the side tables, with enough coverage at the sides and foot to frame the space and bring balance to the layout.

Hallways & Entryways

A runner guides movement through the home, bringing warmth and visual continuity. It should sit centrally within the space, with a consistent border of floor visible on either side to maintain balance.

Aim to leave approximately 10–20cm of floor along each edge. In entryways, a shorter runner or small rug can define the arrival point without crowding, creating a considered transition into the home.

Runners can also be used in kitchens or alongside beds, introducing softness and comfort in high-use areas. Selected designs are available as made-to-order runners, allowing you to customise both size and colour for a seamless fit.

The Foundation Layer

A rug underlay adds a considered finishing layer, enhancing comfort underfoot while keeping your rug securely in place. At 3–4mm, it provides subtle cushioning while helping to protect surfaces and reduce movement.
